I push the door open. Cole stands shirtless at the kitchen island with a cup of coffee in his hand. It’s a refreshing sight compared to my situation last night. I welcome it.

I drop my bag on the sofa, make a beeline for the coffee pot, and grab a mug out of the cupboard. Sensing his eyes on me, I pour myself a cup and take a sip.

As I lower the mug to the counter, I feel his warm hand on my neck. His strong fingers knead my sore muscles. I surrender to the relaxing massage, dropping my shoulders and closing my eyes.

“Good morning,” he whispers into my ear before kissing my cheek.

“Good morning.” I hum the words, gone to his magical and methodical touch on my neck and shoulders.

He’s good.

“It was a tough one,” he states as if he knows what happened to Mary.

I nod.

“Lix mentioned it might be. You got her all settled?”

“Yes. I think she’ll be okay, but I don’t know.”

“Yeah, it’s fucked up. How could a child do that to his mother?”

I rub my fingertips on my forehead. “I don’t understand it.” I shake my head.

He moves me around to face him. My eyes meet his.

Shit. I could fall like a Colorado boulder for this man.

Tumble and fall hard.

His fingers pinch my chin. His mouth lowers. It touches mine.

Everything from the night before, all the anxiety, heartbreak, and anger melts away from his kiss.

It’s frightening.

He grabs my arm and pulls me against his hard body. “You don’t like it here?”

“No.”

“Why?”

I stare at him, wagering on telling him the truth. “I just want to go to Aunt Willa’s so I don’t have to… You know what? It doesn’t matter.” I push against his chest

“It does matter.” He holds me tighter. “What you want matters.” His eyes roam my face. “What do you want, Harper?”

You! I want you!

I want to scream it at the top of my lungs, but for some reason, he refuses to give me what I want. He walks around in nothing but jeans, flaunting his muscular chest and tanned, begging to be touched by the sun skin. He flashes me his sexy little smiles that speak of promise and knowing. There’s no doubt about it. This man knows how to make a woman bend to his will.
